2011 Art Market at a glance

__         ________________  ____________________ _______________________________ __ __  ___

BY CARINA MCPHERSON

The 2011 Australian Art market has been characterised by developments in the areas of investment in visual art, art within self managed superannuation funds, controversy surrounding the re-sale royalty scheme, the movement towards a new National Cultural Policy and a growing sense of internationalism.

After the peak in the Australian art market in 2007 and with the global financial crisis of 2008, recovery of the market has been distinguished by rises and falls in sales and prices. The Australian Art Sales Digest reported the trend that in 2011 the highest sales of art at auction were lower than 2010.

Brett Whiteley’s painting, ‘Washing the Salt off’
retains the highest price of Australian art sold in 2011 at $1,860,000.

‘Digging Stick Dreaming’
by Maggie Napangardi Watson retains the highest sale of 2011 in the area of Aboriginal art at $290,727. Whilst 2011 may not have been the best year for artists or dealers, it has certainly been an opportune time for people to invest in quality art, at presently bargain prices. Click here to read more

SOME USEFUL HINTS FROM AINSLIE GATT

There are guidelines to hanging art like how high off the floor a work should hang, but before getting into those details, here are some top-shelf rules I go by. These may seem obvious at first, but I can't tell you how long it took me to figure some of these things out... the hard way. Click here to read more
